Reimbursement by your health insurance

In the Netherlands, acupuncture is often (partially) reimbursed from supplementary health insurance, provided the treatment is performed by an acupuncturist registered with the NVA (Dutch Association for Acupuncture).

  • Reimbursement through supplementary insurance

Health insurers recognise the NVA as a quality register, which means consultations with NVA members can be claimed under most supplementary packages without referral from a GP. The amount of reimbursement varies per insurer and package: some reimburse a fixed amount per day or per treatment, others a maximum annual budget.

  • No deductible

Treatments do not count towards the deductible (eigen risico), as this is supplementary care. It is therefore wise to check your policy terms in advance to avoid surprises.

  • Check your policy

You can find an up-to-date overview per insurer at zorgwijzer.nl (in Dutch). To be sure, always check your own policy.

  • Submitting the invoice

The invoice lists the treatment as "Behandeling acupunctuur". Use this description when submitting the invoice to your health insurer.
